Measurable Result
KANDU Industries’ proactive approach to improving processes and utilizing technology resulted in increased efficiencies including a reduction of 8 hours a month in payroll processing.
The Story
KANDU, located in Janesville, Wisconsin, has been providing work opportunities to people with disabilities for more than 40 years. KANDU has experienced tremendous growth and today, KANDU employs over 200 "clients" (persons with disabilities) along with a staff of 44, placing KANDU as one of the leading nonprofit work centers in the Midwest.
As funding cuts become more commonplace, the survival of KANDU is dependent upon the ability to derive a greater percentage of revenues from operations.
KANDU realized the need to proactively seek to improve current processes, solve problems faster and deliver an unsurpassed quality of services to its customers. To remain competitive in the outsourcing industry, KANDU needed to take action to begin leveraging technology to remove non-value added steps. These included using paper-based solutions and re-keying data into separate systems.
KANDU originally selected Micosoft Dynamics GP (formerly Great Plains) in 1986 to meet their requirements for a financial system. Knowing that Microsoft Dynamics GP was their long-term financial solution, KANDU decided to revisit the software’s capabilities outside of the modules in use to improve their existing process and contacted their partner, SVA Consulting, LLC.
“SVA Consulting continues to help KANDU Industries find efficient and meaningful solutions to meet our unique needs. They invest in our business success by thoroughly listening, educating and offering alternative solutions. SVA partners with us to creatively design tools to integrate all of our systems,” said Jim McMullen, KANDU Production Manager.
To become less people dependent and utilize technology to its fullest, KANDU and SVA determined that the existing payroll processing needed to be re-engineered. The implementation of a fully integrated vocational payroll solution, and the addition of the Direct Deposit and Human Resources modules had immediate impact for KANDU, saving eight hours of payroll processing time per month.
Now, instead of keying and processing two separate payroll runs into separate systems, all processing is done through Microsoft Dynamics GP. KANDU was also able to eliminate cumbersome spreadsheets that contained confidential HR information. The addition of Direct Deposit added security and cost savings for the organization.
By aligning innovation and technology, KANDU is able to accomplish more without adding staff. The direct result is the ability for KANDU to provide more community services and job opportunities to persons with disabilities or disadvantages.
