The Wisconsin Surcharge Tax for S Corporations is currently being returned to taxpayers. The Wisconsin Department of Revenue has a computer glitch and is not sure when it will be fixed.

Like many of us, you've probably dreamed of turning a hobby or avocation into a legitimate business. You won't have any unusual tax headaches if your new business is profitable. However, if the new enterprise consistently generates losses (when deductions exceed income), the IRS may step in and say it's a hobby—an activity not engaged in for profit—rather than a business. IRS examinations are focusing more attention on taxpayers claiming losses, including assertions that taxpayers purported business activities are actually hobbies and subject to the hobby loss rules.

In December 2011, the IRS released Temporary and Proposed Regulations on deduction and capitalization of expenditures related to tangible property. The regulations are extensive, and make numerous changes to the way businesses treat expenditures related to tangible property. The new regulations were to be effective for 2012 taxable years.
