Technology makes fast turnaround, accurate inventory and custom customer orders possible
A small, niche manufacturer produces specialty equipment used on very complex industrial equipment. Their bills of material are several levels deep and include dozens to hundreds of components. Additionally, their customers often require special customizations that are engineered changes at order time. They are given very short lead times for production and require most products be completed and shipped in a very short window. As a result, a high percentage of their component parts need to be available in inventory.
Using Microsoft Dynamics, they now track work orders for the production of each product. Material Requirements Planning (MRP) is used to keep inventory on-hand, as well as aid in the purchase of special order components. Likewise, flexible bills of material allow them to create a configured bill of material specific to a customer order and properly track both component and labor costs.
Automation & integration of systems and processes creates accuracy, forecasting and improved tracking
A medium-sized manufacturer produces critical components to an international manufacturer of well-known outdoor power equipment. Their business is highly-seasonal and yet their components are all sourced overseas. This in turn, requires inventory accuracy and substantial planning of inventory purchases. All orders are sent via EDI based on forecast and then eventually blanket releases.
Using a combination of Microsoft Dynamics and Accellos, they now receive all of their purchase orders automatically into their ERP software when they arrive via EDI. They use bar-code data collection and warehouse management to keep inventory extremely accurate and track product directly to the production orders. With inventory accurate and timely recording of transactions, they utilize Material Requirements Planning (MRP) to properly plan and forecast their component purchases and finished goods production.
Regulatory requirements met with full origin-to-destination traceability
A Medical Device manufacturer produces products in two locations; one domestically and one internationally. Each finished good contains several different components and some of those components may require lot traceability. Because their products are used in a medical environment and could potentially come in contact with matter that enters the human blood-stream, the origin of all components is highly-regulated.
Using a combination of Microsoft Dynamics with a specific bill-of-material and production management add-in, they are able to track multiple versions of their bill-of-material and any engineering changes to the components. Material Requirements Planning (MRP) capabilities let them plan their component inventory purchases across multiple production sites. Specific lot numbers for components are recorded upon purchase order receipt. As these components are used to produce the final product, they are again recorded. Finally, the lot numbers of finished goods are identified when they are shipped to the customer; giving them full origin-to-destination visibility of all components used in production.
